The Nikon FM2 is a fully mechanical 35mm SLR camera designed around the Nikon F-mount system, featuring a compact metal chassis and electronically assisted center-weighted TTL metering. The camera is equipped with a vertically traveling titanium or aluminum alloy focal-plane shutter, depending on production version, offering shutter speeds from 1s to 1/4000s plus Bulb mode, with flash synchronization up to 1/250s. Its mechanical shutter operation allows full functionality without battery power aside from the exposure meter.
The viewfinder provides approximately 93% frame coverage with interchangeable focusing screens and a manual focus interface optimized for precision focusing. Exposure control is entirely manual, using a match-LED metering display integrated into the finder. The FM2 supports AI and AI-S Nikkor lenses directly and maintains compatibility with a broad range of Nikon F-mount optics. Additional features include mirror lock-up characteristics optimized for reduced vibration, a self-timer mechanism, depth-of-field preview, and motor drive compatibility through the MD-12 accessory system.
