The Sony A7S is a full-frame mirrorless digital camera built around a 12.2MP Exmor CMOS sensor and BIONZ X image processor. Optimized for low-light performance and video, the sensor features large individual pixels, delivering high sensitivity with minimal noise across a wide ISO range (ISO 100–102400, expandable to 409600).

It supports uncompressed 4:2:2 8-bit 4K output via HDMI and full HD internal recording at multiple frame rates, including 1080p at 60fps and 720p at 120fps. The camera offers full manual exposure control, focus peaking, and zebra patterns for video use, along with S-Log2 gamma for extended dynamic range in post-production workflows.

Autofocus is contrast-detection based with 25 points, and manual focus is aided by magnification and peaking. The electronic viewfinder is a 2.36M-dot OLED unit, paired with a 3-inch tilting LCD for flexible composition.

The magnesium alloy body is compact and weather-sealed, with a native E-mount compatible with a wide range of lenses, including full-frame and APS-C glass. The A7S runs on Sony NP-FW50 batteries and supports Wi-Fi/NFC connectivity for remote control and file transfer.
