The Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM is a ultra-compact pancake prime lens designed for full-frame EF mount cameras, maintaining full compatibility with APS-C bodies where it provides an equivalent focal length of approximately 64mm.
Optical construction consists of 6 elements in 4 groups, optimized for controlled aberration performance and consistent sharpness across the frame. The lens features a bright f/2.8 maximum aperture, enabling controlled depth of field and stable low-light exposure.
Autofocus is driven by a Stepping Motor (STM) system, supporting smooth and quiet focusing behavior suitable for both stills and video acquisition. Minimum focusing distance is 0.30m, with a maximum magnification of 0.18×.
Physical design includes a low-profile 22.8mm length, 68.2mm diameter, 52mm filter thread, and approximately 130g weight, making it one of the most compact EF primes. The diaphragm uses a 7-blade circular design for controlled out-of-focus rendering.
