It retains the iconic build and operation of larger Rolleiflex models, but in a more compact form factor, aimed at photographers seeking a high-quality, portable TLR.
The camera is equipped with a 60mm f/3.5 Zeiss Tessar or Schneider Xenar taking lens, depending on the version. Both are four-element, three-group designs known for their sharpness, contrast, and controlled field curvature. The viewing lens matches the focal length and aperture of the taking lens and is coupled to the focusing mechanism, which is operated via a side-mounted knob with a depth of field scale.
Film advance is manual, typically with a red window for frame counting, although later models introduced automatic frame spacing and crank advance. The 4x4 format allows for 12 exposures per roll of 127 film, offering the square composition typical of Rolleiflex cameras, but in a smaller format.
