The Samyang 14mm f/2.8 IF ED UMC Aspherical (Canon EF mount) is an ultra-wide-angle manual focus prime lens designed for full-frame and APS-C format DSLRs. On a full-frame body, it provides a 114° angle of view, making it well-suited for landscape, architecture, interior, and astrophotography.
The optical design includes 14 elements in 10 groups, featuring 2 aspherical elements and 2 ED (Extra-low Dispersion) elements. This construction is engineered to minimize optical aberrations such as distortion, chromatic aberration, and spherical aberration. The Ultra Multi-Coating (UMC) applied to lens elements enhances light transmission while reducing flare and ghosting. The minimum focusing distance is 0.28 m (11 inches), allowing for close-up wide-angle compositions.
Mechanically, the lens features a solid, metal barrel construction, providing a durable and robust feel. The Canon EF version includes manual aperture control via a physical ring, with a 6-blade diaphragm for pleasing out-of-focus areas.
