The Ricoh GR1 is a premium compact 35mm film camera featuring a fixed 28mm f/2.8 GR lens with a 7-element, 4-group optical construction, known for its high sharpness, contrast, and minimal distortion. The lens is retractable and automatically extends when the camera is powered on, contributing to the camera’s slim, pocketable profile.
The GR1 is equipped with a passive multi-point infrared autofocus system with spot AF and pre-focus lock capability. A manual focus mode is also available, offering preset distances for zone focusing. The built-in exposure system uses a 6-segment multi-pattern metering sensor, with automatic exposure control in program mode. Exposure compensation is adjustable in ±2 EV in 0.5-step increments. The leaf shutter operates between 2 seconds and 1/500s, with flash sync available at all speeds.
The built-in flash includes multiple modes such as auto, flash-on, flash-off, and backlight compensation.
The viewfinder is bright and features frame lines with parallax correction marks. Film transport is fully motorized, including automatic loading, advance, and rewind. The camera body is constructed from lightweight magnesium alloy, combining durability with a refined, minimalist design.
