The Yashica T4 is a 35mm point-and-shoot film camera introduced in the early 1990s, developed by Kyocera under the Yashica brand and part of the T* series known for incorporating Carl Zeiss optics. Designed for simplicity and portability, the T4 targets casual users seeking high-quality optics in a fully automatic compact camera.
The T4 is built around a fixed 35mm f/3.5 Carl Zeiss Tessar T* lens, consisting of 4 elements in 3 groups. The lens features Zeiss’s T* multi-coating to reduce flare and increase contrast and color fidelity. Autofocus is passive, center-weighted, and powered by an infrared system; manual focus override is not available. Exposure is fully automatic, controlled via a programmed electronic shutter ranging from 1/700s to 1 second (with long exposure up to 3 seconds in low light), and a built-in metering system that evaluates light through a CdS sensor. The camera has a built-in flash with automatic operation, fill-flash, red-eye reduction, and flash-off modes, and a minimum focus distance of approximately 0.35 meters. Film transport (advance, rewind) is motorized, and DX-coded film from ISO 50 to 3200 is supported; non-coded film defaults to ISO 100. One of its distinctive features is the inclusion of a top-mounted waist-level viewfinder (in the T4 Super/Databack version), which allows for low-angle framing. The body is plastic with weather-resistant sealing, and the camera operates on a single CR123A lithium battery.
