The Contax Carl Zeiss Planar 40mm f/2 for the Contax G system is a compact, high-performance standard lens designed for the Contax G rangefinder cameras. It features a classic Planar optical design with 5 elements in 4 groups, known for its sharpness, contrast, and smooth rendering. The 40mm focal length offers a slightly wider-than-normal field of view, making it a versatile option for everyday photography, balancing context and subject isolation well.

The lens has a maximum aperture of f/2, enabling good low-light performance and shallow depth of field control, while maintaining high image quality across the aperture range. Its minimum focusing distance is approximately 0.5 meters when used on its native G system.

This lens can be adapted to mirrorless systems—such as Sony E, Fujifilm X, Leica L, or Micro Four Thirds—using dedicated Contax G to mirrorless adapters. These adapters often include a mechanical helicoid that provides smooth manual focus control, compensating for the original lack of a focusing ring. The lens performs well on modern sensors, retaining its characteristic Zeiss microcontrast and color rendering.

The Planar 40mm f/2 can also be converted to Leica M mount, typically through custom mechanical modification. This process involves remounting the lens in a new M-compatible housing, complete with a proper manual focus helicoid and rangefinder coupling. When converted properly, it becomes fully usable on Leica M rangefinder bodies with accurate manual focus and rangefinder alignment. It may also be used on M-mount digital cameras such as the Leica M10 or M11, or adapted further to mirrorless bodies via M-mount adapters.
