The Canon Canonet QL17 G-III is a compact 35mm rangefinder camera with a fixed lens, introduced in the early 1970s as the final and most refined model in the Canonet series. It features a high-quality 40mm f/1.7 Canon lens with a six-element, four-group optical construction, known for its sharp rendering and smooth bokeh. Focusing is manual via a coupled rangefinder mechanism with a focus throw from 0.8m to infinity.
The lens is equipped with a leaf shutter providing speeds from 1/4 to 1/500 second, plus Bulb mode. The aperture range is f/1.7 to f/16, and the shutter is synchronized for flash at all speeds via a hot shoe or PC terminal. Exposure control operates in shutter-priority auto-exposure mode using a CdS light meter (powered by a 1.35V mercury battery), or fully manual mode with match-needle metering visible in the viewfinder.
Build quality is solid with a metal chassis and compact, ergonomic design. The film advance is manual with a single-stroke lever, and the frame counter is automatically reset upon back closure. Rewind is manual via a fold-out crank.
The QL17 G-III is known for its compact form factor, quiet shutter, and fast lens, making it well-suited for street and travel photography. It accepts 48mm screw-in filters and uses a standard mechanical cable release. Though originally designed for mercury batteries, modern users typically substitute 1.5V alkaline or zinc-air cells with minimal impact on metering accuracy.
