The Canon PowerShot G12 is a compact digital camera positioned in the advanced enthusiast segment, built around a 1/1.7-inch CCD sensor with a resolution of 10 megapixels (3648 x 2736). It uses Canon’s DIGIC 4 image processor and supports both RAW (CR2) and JPEG formats. ISO sensitivity ranges from 80 to 3200, with an expanded range up to ISO 12800 in Low Light mode. The camera offers full manual exposure control and captures images at a maximum burst rate of approximately 2 fps.
The built-in 5x optical zoom lens covers a 28–140mm equivalent focal range, with a variable aperture of f/2.8–4.5. The optical formula consists of 11 elements in 9 groups, including 1 double-sided aspherical lens element for improved sharpness and reduced distortion. Canon's Optical Image Stabilization (IS) is integrated into the lens to assist in handheld shooting at slower shutter speeds. The minimum focusing distance is 1 cm in macro mode.
Autofocus is handled via a contrast-detection AF system, with face detection, tracking, and manual focus options. The G12 supports shutter speeds from 15s to 1/4000s, and includes a built-in ND filter that can be activated via menu for extended exposure control in bright conditions. The rear LCD is a 2.8-inch vari-angle TFT screen with 461,000 dots, complemented by a built-in optical viewfinder.
