The Canon AE-1 Program is a 35mm SLR film camera featuring a fully electronic shutter and automatic exposure modes. Introduced in 1981, it builds on the original AE-1 by adding Program AE mode, which automatically selects both shutter speed and aperture. Manual and shutter-priority modes are also available, with speeds ranging from 2 seconds to 1/1000s and flash sync at 1/60s.
The viewfinder offers 0.86x magnification and displays shutter speed information, while aperture is shown on the lens. Metering is center-weighted through-the-lens (TTL), using a silicon photocell. Film advance is manual with a smooth single-stroke lever, and the camera is powered by a single 4LR44 battery.
Paired with the Canon FDn 50mm f/1.4 lens, it delivers sharp results and strong low-light performance. The lens features 7 elements in 6 groups, a 52mm filter thread, and a smooth, mechanically-linked focus ring. Aperture control is fully manual, ranging from f/1.4 to f/22.
